The most critical aspect of cigar storage is maintaining the environment. The industry standard is the “70/70 rule”: 70% relative humidity (RH) and 70°F (21°C). If the air is too dry, the essential oils in the tobacco evaporate, leaving the cigar brittle and flavorless. Conversely, excessive humidity can lead to mold or “swelling,” causing the wrapper to burst. High temperatures are also a risk, as they can trigger an outbreak of tobacco beetles.
Invest in a Quality Humidor
A cedar-lined humidor is the best home for your cigars. Spanish cedar is preferred because it helps regulate moisture and imparts a complementary aroma. Ensure your humidor has a tight seal and is equipped with a calibrated hygrometer to monitor humidity levels accurately.
Handling and Airflow
Avoid overcrowding your humidor. Cigars need a bit of “breathing room” for air to circulate. It is also a good practice to rotate your cigars every few weeks, moving the bottom layer to the top to ensure even humidification. When handling them, be gentle; the outer wrapper is delicate and can easily crack.
